I recently had the opportunity to chat with my friend and fellow speaker, Marianne Hickman, on her podcast, The Marianne Hickman Show.
I love talking with people about the power of personal style because it’s something that is commonly misunderstood.
I don’t judge. I didn’t get it myself. In fact, for most of my life, I didn’t care too much about fashion, even though I had a knack for shopping. It was a first world problem. Something frivolous that wasn’t worth getting hung up over. Until the day that clothing helped me reclaim my life.
When you use clothing as a form of self-expression and personal empowerment, you harness the power of style. In this conversation, Marianne and I talked about the power of owning your personal style and how that one shift can change everything: your confidence, your relationships, your career, your life. Here are a few of my favorite takeaways.
The question that changes everything:
Most of us have spent our whole lives asking "how do I look?" without realizing that the moment we ask that question, we give our power away. But when you flip the question to, "How do I want to show up?" everything changes.
Chasing trends is how you lose yourself:
The sentence I hear most often from women who come to work with me is this: "I don't even know who I am anymore." They've spent years making themselves smaller, more palatable, more acceptable, in their wardrobes and in their lives. When I do style transformation experiences with my clients, clothing becomes a tool for reclaiming their personal style. Finding their voice. Making their mark on the world.
And people notice. But the transformation people see on the outside isn't about the clothes. It's about the woman who finally stopped apologizing for taking up space and started owning her life story.
Confidence is showstopping:
One of my clients stopped traffic.
She hadn't lost weight. She hadn't overhauled her closet. She had done the inner work, found her style, and owned it.
That kind of confidence is visible.
It's magnetic.
And it has nothing to do with being a certain size or following the right trends. It has everything to do with knowing who you are and being willing to show it.
