I don’t know about you, but I’m so excited for Wicked to hit the big screen!
Even if you’re not a Wizard of Oz fan, there’s a lesson we can all take from the story—and it’s all about those iconic ruby red slippers.
I wrote about this on LinkedIn recently, focusing on the connection between style and personal branding for professionals. But here’s the thing: personal branding isn’t just for corporate types.
Your personal brand isn't about building a business or a career—it’s about the business of life. Personal branding is how you express who you are and how you show up in every area of your life, from your career to your relationships to how you navigate your day-to-day life. We all get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life—especially as women, where we're often juggling a million things at once, and we often lose sight of ourselves in the process.
The truth is, if we’re not intentional about how we show up, we can easily get lost in the shuffle of life.
This is why personal branding matters. Whether you're a stay-at-home mom, a single woman navigating the world, or a corporate boss, your personal brand is about finding that power within and channeling it, every single day. And style can hep you do that. Here's a breakdown of what I shared with working professionals about how to your personal style can help you build a powerful personal brand:
1. Know Your Values
Your personal brand is rooted in your values. These are the things that matter most to you, and they shape every decision you make—including the way you dress. Think about the clothes you wear as an outward reflection of who you are on the inside. When your wardrobe aligns with your values—whether that’s comfort, simplicity, strength, or creativity—you feel more authentic. You feel more you. And when you feel aligned, you walk into any room with confidence because your choices reflect your true self. No pretending, no fitting into someone else’s idea of what you should be. Just you, owning your space.
Embrace Your Story
We all have a story that’s unique to us. It’s shaped by the experiences, challenges, and victories we’ve lived through. And a big part of that story comes from the archetypes that define who we are. If you’ve ever taken a personality test to discover which Disney princess, Game of Thrones character, or superhero you’re most like, you’ve played with the concept of archetypes. These are universal, timeless character types that shape our personality and influence how we show up in the world.
Maybe you're the Warrior, fierce and determined, or the Caregiver, deeply nurturing and empathetic. Or perhaps you identify with the Explorer, always seeking adventure and new experiences. Understanding which archetypes resonate with you allows you to dress in a way that aligns with your inner strength, making your wardrobe an extension of who you are.
3. Own Your Power
At the end of the day, it’s not about keeping up with the latest trends or wearing a “power suit”—it’s about making intentional choices that reflect the person you know yourself to be. Own your power by aligning the way you dress with who you are and what you stand for. Every outfit is a decision. Will it reflect your strength, your creativity, your playfulness? When you start making choices with intention—whether it’s a red dress that makes you feel unstoppable or those comfy sneakers that remind you to stay grounded—you tap into your personal power. Your style becomes an extension of your authentic self, and that’s when real confidence shines through.
Step Into Your Power and Own Your Brand
So, here’s the thing: whether you’re wearing those ruby slippers (or your favorite pair of sneakers) or rocking a power suit, the real power lies in you. It’s about showing up authentically, owning your values, and letting your choices reflect who you really are. Your personal brand isn’t about the clothes you wear—it’s about how you wear them, how you live them, and how you make them your own.
Just like Dorothy, it's time to realize that the real power has been within you all along. . . .
