Weigh-Ins, Accountability, and Why Coaches Need Coaches (or to Raise a Teenager)

Wrestling season is here again. My daughter’s senior season (and she recently got her first win-by-pin. WOOT!).

Wrestling is an interesting sport for women. There’s grit, determination, skill, and strategy.

And there are the weigh-ins.

Weigh-ins are part of the sport—a necessary tool for safety and fairness. But for women, who already carry the baggage of social pressures around weight, variations on weight (water retention, etc.) that men don’t deal with, and other factors that make the weigh-ins a tricky balance between sport and psychology.

My daughter had been intentional about what she eats, even before becoming a wrestler. But with season in full gear, she wanted some additional accountability and support in eating clean.

I’m a life coach. Accountability is my jam. We’re moving toward the New Year and healthy eating resolution time, so heck yes, said I. I’m in.

I need to put my kid on my sales team.

Without realizing it, she’d signed me up for a health and wellness coaching program.

And holy wow—the awareness that's hit me in just a few days is huge.

I wasn't off the rails. But suddenly, I'm seeing how unconsciously I reach for food when I'm bored, tired, or just happen to be in the general vicinity of the kitchen.

But as most of us know, reaching for the “most convenient” thing isn’t always the most supportive thing.Grabbing a sugary treat may take less time and give an initial energy boost, but it comes with a crash. In just a few days, I’ve realized why I’ve been feeling more tired, sluggish and blah.

The funny thing is that diet wasn’t a goal for me. It wasn’t even on my radar. But in just a few days, I’ve been reminded of how much  of a difference the small, unconscious daily choices we make play a huge role in how we approach life.

That's the magic of accountability.

The power of having an accountability partner or coach insn’t about having someone to regulate our choices but about bringing conscious awareness to the little choices we make and the habits that determine our outcomes in life.

Consciousness changes everything.

Once you see your patterns, you can try to ignore them, but you can't unsee them.

That’s the real power of having an accountability partner or hiring a coach. It isn't about having someone responsible for policing our choices. It's about creating a dynamic that forces us to be more aware and conscious of our daily choices. The simple act of naming our choices brings our unconscious patterns into the light.

It makes us accountable to ourselves.

So a we near the New Year and those notorious New Year’s Wishes that never really become Resolutions, make accountability the game changer. Whether you get an accountability partner, hire a coach, or raise a teenager who’ll kick your butt into gear, now’s the time to get the support you need.

Surround yourself with the right people who’ll hold you accountable, raise your personal awareness, and help you design your best life.

You’re worth it.
