Burnout, AI Freeze, or Exhaustion?

You're tired. Bone-deep, can't-remember-the-last-time-you-felt-excited tired.


You're showing up, checking the boxes, and doing all the things. 


But something is off.


The spark is gone. The energy is gone. And honestly? You're starting to wonder where you've gone. Or worse. You're wondering if you’ll ever start feeling like yourself again. The problem is that what you're feeling could be exhaustion. It could be burnout. Or it could be something newer. Something a lot of people are experiencing right now.


I call it the AI Freeze. The paralysis a lot of people are in because of all the disruption caused by the AI revolution and living in an age of general uncertainty and unknowns.


Here's why it matters: each one of these situations has a different root cause. And different root causes require different solutions. Try to treat a symptom with the wrong solution, and the problem persists.It could even get worse.


I learned that the hard way going through the surprising onset of symptoms caused by multiple chronic illnesses, I never knew I had.Two months after my son was born, my life turned upside down.


I couldn’t sit or stand for long periods of time. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t hold my son.


And the worst part was that doctors couldn’t figure out why.They ran tests. They tried protocols. I was a medical guinea pig, paying for the privilege.


And a lot of what we tried made things worse. 


Eventually, I reached my breaking point. 


Even though I was a single mom without a whole lot of money, I decided I couldn’t afford not getting an accurate diagnosis. Which required traveling out of state.It was scary. It was expensive.But that decision changed everything.


And made me realize that treating symptoms and getting to the root cause of an issue are two different things.


My chronic conditions weren’t caused by burnout, but they were ignited by it. And finding the root cause of your burnout and what you’re dealing with is the first step to reclaiming your energy and getting back in the flow of life.So here’s a breakdown to help you figure out some of the differences between the conditions a lot of us are dealing with:


#1: Exhaustion (A Marathon with A Finish Line)


Root cause: A specific event with a beginning and an end.


I know a lot of people who like marathons. Even though they’re grueling. And they’re exhausting.But they run them time and time again because they know how to manage it. They know how to train for it. They know when to push through and when to rest.The same is true of exhaustion in other areas of our lives.

When you’re getting ready for a big deadline or an upcoming project at work. You’re anticipating the pending arrival of a new baby (and the oncoming loss of sleep). You’re facing a pressure situation that you can expect, prepare in a advance, and muster the strength to push through because there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.


That's exhaustion. And it's real.


But there's the key to what makes exhaustion manageable: exhaustion has a starting line and a finish line. There's a clear cause, a clear event, and somewhere in the back of your mind, you know this won't last forever. 


That clarity, even when it feels far away, is what keeps you moving.


Signs you're dealing with exhaustion:

  • You know exactly what drained you

  • You can create a self-care plan that works with the current circumstances

  • Given time to recover, you bounce back


What helps with exhaustion:

  • Structured recovery time after the sprint ends

  • Mindset support to push through the final stretch

  • A celebration that rewards the hard work you put in

  • Intentional self-care along the way.


When you’re dealing with exhaustion, having someone to rally you, remind you why it matters, and help you cross the finish line with your dignity intact can be part of getting through.


The problem is when you confuse burnout for exhaustion.


Condition #2: Burnout (The Never-ending Story)


Root cause: A slow, cumulative depletion of your energy that eventually seeps into multiple areas of your life.


Unlike exhaustion, burnout isn’t something you anticipate, plan for, and eventually get through.It’s a slow burn. It’s not a marathon, but it’s not a sprint either.


It starts as irritation. A low-grade frustration that keeps buggin you, like a gnat.


And you ignore it, because you’re a grown adult. You’re a good person. You work with it and keep going. But the more you try to ignore it, the more it builds.


It festers. Until it starts to drain you in multiple areas of life. You're stressed and frustrated at work, so your patience is short when you get home to a chaotic house with loud, busy kids.


You take time for self-care, and it works. At first. But then you’ve got to return to the hustle and grind, and the self-care is a band-aid fix that doesn’t work long term. You push through because that’s what always worked before. Except now, it doesn’t. That’s because mindset and self-care are great tools for managing exhaustion.But burnout isn’t a sign it’s time to push through. It’s a sign that something’s got to change.


And burnout isn’t a one-size-fits-all problem.


What burns one person out fuels someone else.


And until you get to the root cause of your burnout. Until you address what’s calling you to get aligned with your next step toward personal growth and personal success, it will fester until you do.

Signs you're dealing with burnout:

  • You can't remember when you last felt genuinely motivated

  • Bubble baths, dinners out, and other self-care or work-life balance tricks don't actually restore you

  • You feel frustrated or unfulfilled about the things, situations, or relationships that used to fuel you


What actually helps:

  • Personal awareness to identify areas where things are off

  • A proactive plan that moves you into action to resolve the root cause of your burnout

  • Coaching, counseling, or other personal and professional development tools to help you gain clarity in identifying the root cause of burnout and accountability and support in resolving it.


Burnout isn't a sign of failure. It is feedback. And when you know how to read it, it becomes a launchpad to your next level of success.


But in our modern age of AI, there’s also another lurking culprit that is affecting our productivity and wellbeing, and that’s what I call the AI Freeze, and it’s causing even more confusion when we’re trying to figure out what’s draining our energy.

Condition #3: The AI Freeze 

Root cause: Fear and uncertainty triggered by disruption, especially AI.


We are living through a massive period of change and disruption.


AI is reshaping entire industries, eliminating roles, creating new ones, and moving faster than most people can process. Layer that on top of economic instability, mass layoffs, and a world of unknowns, and that’s got a lot of people scared:

  • Scared that you might be the next to face a layoff

  • Scared the skills you've spent years building and the degrees you’ve earned will suddenly obsolete

  • Scared the plans you made for your future can be disrupted overnight, and there’s nothing you can do to prepare for it or prevent it


No wonder people are feeling nervous.


When humans face that level of uncertainty, survival instincts take over. Productivity tanks. Creativity disappears. Engagement drops.


And that’s when our lizard brains take over and we head into fight, flight or freeze: a place that’s not historically known for making the best decisions ever.


Signs you're experiencing AI Freeze:

  • You feel paralyzed or anxious. Not just tired.

  • You're more anxious about the future than depleted from the past


With AI Freeze, unless you find a crystal ball to give you some clarity around the future, part of moving through it isn’t getting clear answers, especially when that’s something even some of the top experts and leaders don’t have.


So, what can help?

  • Resilience and adaptability tools

  • Getting accurate information about what trends are affecting your work industry

  • Gaining understanding and training the tools and skillsets that you’re seeing are needed


Motivation alone won't move a frozen person. You’ve to address the fear directly.


I know this one personally. In 2016, I lost my health, my marriage, and my career in what I called my "hell week" that lasted years. Navigating my own personal polycrisis taught me that resilience isn't a personality trait. It's a skill set. And it can be built.


The Bottom Line


We are all going through a lot, and trying to keep it together can feel like standing in front of a tidal wave without a life vest.


Some people are burned out. Some are exhausted. And some are frozen, quietly hoping this too shall pass.


The key to getting through the stuck, while we all figure out what new normal even looks like, is to identify what you're actually dealing with and find the right tools to help you through it.


And here's the good news: regardless of the source of your energy drain, you’re not alone. Tools and resources exist. More are being created every day to meet the new challenges ahead.


What I learned navigating my own polycrisis years ago is what keeps me grounded today.

Human beings are the world's greatest natural resource.


We've been through dark times before. We've proven that we’re a resilient, adaptable species.


Even though hard times sometimes bring out the worst in us, we do, eventually, come out the other side. And hopefully better for it.
