Summary: If you're a high-achieving woman wondering why you can't seem to outwork, outplan, or outpositive-think your way out of burnout, this post is for you. In it, Kimberly Parry, Your Real Life Fairy Godmother™, breaks down what the Cinderella story can teach you about burnout. And it's not what you think.

When people hear that I’m "Your Real Life Fairy Godmother™", they want me to swoop in, wave my wand, and fix all their problems. I get it. When you're burned out, exhausted, and running on fumes, the idea of someone showing up to rescue you sounds really good.
But that’s not what I do.
And that’s not what you need if you’re dealing with burnout.
The truth is that no one can solve your burnout but you. In fact, that’s what burnout is trying to do. It’s a wake-up call. A warning sign that something isn’t working for you.
All a fairy godmother does is help Cinderella catch a vision of what that looks like, and the rest takes care of itself.
What the Cinderella Story Teaches About Burnout
Let's revisit the original story to illustrate what I mean:
At the beginning of the story, Cinderella has a problem. But she doesn’t even know it.
She’s a side kick in her step-sisters’ story. She does the work, she settles for cinders, and is fine with it because she doesn’t know any better.
Sure, life might be hard.
But she’s fine. It’s good enough.
She’s got a place to sleep, food to eat, and that should be enough. She should be happy.
She’s been told it’s not nice to say no. To complain. To advocate for herself.
So she meets the needs of everyone else, gets the job done, and sings with the field mice and birds because she’s okay. She’s fine. She’s content. (Sound familiar?)
Until she’s not.
Cinderella gets word of a ball.
And it sounds fun. Exciting. Better than fine.
And she wants to go. She’s invited to go. Every maiden in the land has been invited to attend.
But the step-mother and step-sisters say no.
That would be inconvenient. That would cramp their style. That would make life uncomfortable. For them.
And Cinderellas job is to make everyone else comfortable. (Sound familiar?)
Except, it’s NOT.
That stupid ball puts a bee in Cindy’s bonnet, and she can’t help but hear the call.
So she does everything she can to change her circumstances. She throws herself into her work. Checks all the to-do lists.
But it’s still not enough.
The world around her says no. You can’t go. No ball. No fun. Just be content with cinders, soot, and the crumbs from the table like you always have. You’ll be fine.
But she wasn’t.
She’d done all she could, gave it all she had, and she was frustrated, fed up, and burned out.And stuck. And that’s when the fairy godmother shows up.
She brings a little magic, a change of perspective.
She takes everything Cinderella already had available to her and showed her it’s potential. She gave Cinderella a much needed girls’ night out, yes. But it was more than that: it was a glimpse of what was possible. Then, at midnight, it was gone. One night. One ball. And the fairy godmother was gone.
For one night, Cinderella had a fairy godmother. She had glass slippers. She had a prince.
And none of those things saved her.
The fairy godmother didn't break her out of the attic. The prince didn't ride in on a horse.
The magic wore off at midnight and left her right back where she started: same house, same stepmother, same life.
The externals hadn't changed.
But Cinderella had.
For one night, she got a taste of what was possible. She felt it. She lived it. She knew, in her bones, who she was and what she was capable of. And once you know that, you can't unknow it.
There was no going back.
And that changed everything.
The Root Cause of Burnout
It can for you, too.
Because here’s the truth about burnout:
Burnout isn't about working too hard. If you’re doing something that you love, it fuels you without burning you out. Burnout is when you lose yourself chasing someone else’s definition of success. Being a side kick in someone else’s life. Or when you’ve outgrown something that used to work and it’s time for more. Human beings are evolutionary creatures. We’re not meant to pleateau. We’re meant to grow.
The real trap isn’t from workload. It’s from living the wrong story. One that wasn’t meant for you. Or one that’s waiting for you to move to the next chapter.
And no amount of vacation days, bubble baths, or self-care Sundays will cure that.
The Fire That Changes Everything
What transformed Cinderella was the vision of what was possible. A call to live her full potential and stop settling for fine.
That realization changed everything. And that’s what transforms burnout into your next level of success.
Not a rescue. Not a prince. Not a wand. Not even the right coach, framework, or program (although those things can help you get there faster). The shift happens when you get a real, clear vision of who you are, what you’re here for, and what you're made of.
When that fire gets lit, there’s no stopping it.
When you have that vision, you're the one who does the work (and has fun doing it). You choose differently, you live differently, and you start writing your own happily ever after. The secret in the story? You're the one who saves yourself.
You already have everything you need.
But if you want Your Real Life Fairy Godmother™ to help you get there faster (and have fun doing it), I’m just an application away. Until then, write your story and live your dream. Because you’re worth it.

FAQs:
Q: What is the root cause of burnout for high-achieving women?
A: For most high-achieving women, burnout isn't caused by working too hard. It’s by doing work that’s not aligned with their core personality. When your identity becomes tied to your output and performance, you burn out. Reconnecting to your core identity and gaining clarity on your life goals and vision is where real burnout recovery begins. Defining a Signature Soul Style™ that reflects that is just the icing on the cake.
Q: Can you recover from burnout without taking time off work?
A: Recovery from burnout is less about how much time you take off and more about addressing the root cause beneath it. While rest matters, the deeper work is getting aligned with your personal style and how you naturally respond to the world and show up for life. That clarity doesn’t require a sabbatical from work or hours of journaling. At Emergence Life Coaching, we get can get you started in just 4-8 weeks.
Q: How does personal styling help with burnout recovery?
A: From the time you were a kid, clothes were a way you connected with your sense of identity and communicated who you are to the world. But at some point, we stop dressing for self-expression and self-identity and start dressing to conform, to fit in, and to survive. Retail therapy won’t work for burnout, but using fashion as a personal development tool for self-discovery and self-expression can. When you work with Kimberly Parry, Your Real Life Fairy Godmother™ can help you identify the patterns keeping you stuck, reconnect to your strengths and sense of self and fashion as a tool to own your voice and communicate who you are to the world, without having to say a word.
